Pros vs Cons
Pros: Vygotsky’s theory on social constructivism was the theory that often is compared to Piaget. However, his theory has provided education with key fundamentals and skills that needs to be implemented into our daily lessons across all subject areas. Vygotsky’s shows educators that a student’s environment has an effect on the student’s learning ability.. This does not include direct instruction but should include the student facilitating his or her learning through peer interaction and one’s environment. Vygotsky’s theory acknowledges differences between individuals within the same culture and between people from different cultures.
Cons: When comparing the following theorist Robert Gagne, Siemens and Downes and Vygotsky , they all play a vital role in offering ideas and approaches to student’s ability to retain information gained through years of education. Vygotsky’s main focus as a learning theorist was to show how knowledge lies between the interactions with one another and our environment. Robert Gagne theory was based on a instructional design concept. This involved people learning without changing one’s behavior as a means of measuring if actual learning is taken place. Siemens and Downes focused on how knowledge is distributed across a network of connections and learning consisting of the ability to construct and traverse those networks. Siemens and Downes theory focus more on the 21st century aspect of learning that includes the use of technology.
